If your air conditioner is picking up vehicle exhaust, your gas heaters are somehow leaking CO into your basement, one gets unexplained headaches working in any enclosed space, or need to test breathing gases such as in SCUBA, a CO detector is mandatory. The $100 GSI meter is a re-branded meter that is commonly sold as the HT1000 manufactured by Hotik, in mainland China. Its nearly identical to a meter sold by Extech for $240. It alarms by beeping at 35 ppm, becoming more frequent and severe as the ppm rises. Its is back lit and runs off a 9V battery. A hold button exists to keep a reading on the LCD screen for later notation, but it clears when the meter is shut off. It is surprisingly small & portable. It came with a nice carrying case too; The detector is super user friendly, a child could use it. I have faith in the acccuracy of the readings. Thankfully I haven't needed the "danger alert" alarm, but I am glad it has that feature. This product is not very expensive for all that you get. The First Alert GCO1CN combination explosive gas and carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. It also detects natural gas, methane gas, and propane gas. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet or mounting it above an outlet and plugging in the higher line cord. Its easy-to-read large digital display gives you a clear readout of current hazard and levels. A peak level button alerts you to the highest level of explosive gas or carbon monoxide detected. I HATE this alarm. Although it's plugged into the wall, you also _have_ to install a 9 volt battery. Most devices that have a battery back up don't drain the battery while the unit is plugged in. Not this alarm! I probably go through 3-4 9 volt batteries each winter. And if the battery starts to lose it's charge, or you dare to leave the battery out, the alarm beeps every few minutes. Another important thing to note about this alarm... although it can detect carbon monoxide and natural gas, you're supposed to mount the device at different heights depending on the gas you're trying to detect. In other words, it doesn't really serve it's dual purpose. Although I've already lost the $50, I'll be buying a different alarm for this season. I can't take dealing with its battery problems anymore. The first time the carbon monoxide alarm went off, I had the fire department out here within minutes thinking we had a big problem. They found nothing in the house. Since then, the alarm sounds about 4 times a week, all false alarms. I've moved the placement of the monitor several times as per the instructions, but it still gives a lot of false alarms. We had a propane leak, and this unit notified us before we could smell it. It also notified us of a CO2 issue when the generator vent was closed off. Well worth the money. This model wasn't actually designed by First Alert/BRK, but is a rebranded and slightly modified (different connector) version of an old American Sensors model (770LBX), and hasn't been updated in years. For example, this model only has a red LED, while most current hardwire smoke alarms have both a red LED and a green LED (green to indicate AC power and red to indicate the alarm is working as well as to indicate which alarm went off). If you have an old First Alert/BRK setup but want a dual sensor alarm, your best bet would be to buy the Kidde PI2010 plus a Kidde KA-B adapter. The PI2010 is a much newer and more modern alarm. EDIT: I just learned that there is a new BRK/First Alert hardwire dual sensor model, the 3120B. However, very few stores seem to carry it, and it costs more than the Kidde PI2010. Five 15-second duration false alarms in two months, with no obvious triggers. Not enough time to find the offending unit in an interconnected system with six detectors since this detector does not indicate which detector set off the alarm. BRK suggests disconnecting the wiring harness and run on battery power alone to isolate the bad actor. That's going to take a while and what does it really prove if 120 v. AC is disconnected? Other negative issues are that the battery is behind a screwed-in door on the back of the detector, so you have to remove it to get at it - an old design. Also, it's not very current when it comes to air sealing. Other detectors make a good seal on the ceiling; this detector has a piece of paper you put in between the detector and its base - hardly air proof. In addition, as I said earlier, it lacks the feature of some BRK's other products of having a memory alarm, or "latching" feature which shows which detector initiated the alarm... The only issue I had in ordering this was I ordered a SA773CN and I received a SA770LBX. The difference is in the electrical connector. Since I was replacing existing smoke detectors, this difference caused me to have to change the connector in the wall before I could install this detector - an extra step that I tried to avoid by ordering the SA773CN part number.
