They have a slide-out battery door, which would be pretty convenient, except that the battery door doesn't slide in/out easily and the manufacturer says you're supposed to disconnect the AC power before changing the battery anyway.One of them started chirping recently. It was hard to find the one that was upset, since the red light doesn't come on despite the instructions saying it will. I replaced the battery, but it continued to chirp for several minutes. I tried another battery, no luck. Not wanting to be left without a detector in my basement, I bought another identical one and figured I'd send the bad one back so I have a spare in case another one breaks. To get repair service, USI's instructions say you have to send $5 for return shipping and provide the original sales receipt. Of course, I don't have the receipt for the failed unit since it came with the house, and paying for... Change battery (the battery receiptacle is not holding the battery very correctly) does not change the 'bipping' Changing for new units sometime works. I am looking for other units, tired to listen those continuous beeps. Have been in the home for about 2 years. 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful This is the cheapest UL listed you can buy, This review is from: Universal Security Instruments USI-5204 120-Volt AC/DC Wired-In Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement) The reason contractors put these in is that they are the cheapest UL listed up-to-code detectors you can buy.The reason they die is that the battery compartment is built so that any amount of force applied when removing it will permanently damage the connection between the battery drawer and the unit, so it will no longer receive battery power, so it will continue warning beeping. The chirping in the middle of the night is likely because of temperature/air cycles causing the battery to be at its lowest then, and thus trigger the low battery warning early. I've even replaced a couple of these, and one of the replacements is already broken. Because they are so cheap (in all meanings of the word), sending back for replacement and paying shipping is not worth it. I am now looking to re-wire the interconnected detectors I have left to some other brand, rather than keep going on this train wreck. |
