2.0 out of 5 stars Worked fine for a few years...then went nuts, January 12, 2006

We have 7 of these, interconnected as per local building codes. All were installed by the builder in our new home in 1999. Although we are diligent about battery changes, the alarms started failing about 6 months ago.

Failure takes the form of all the alarms going off simultaneously, invariably at about 3:00am. This wakes up my family and frightens everyone. I then have to search the house for any sign of a fire or smoke, find nothing, track down the offending alarm and rip it off the ceiling.

In the light of day, I then replace the battery and hook everything back up. A few nights later, it happens again. This never happens in the daytime for some reason...Murphy's Law, I suppose. After the second "strike," I remove the detector and toss it.

I am now down to 5 of these that still work and am actively looking for replacements.

Recently I was at a neighbor's house (also built in '99 by the same builder) and noticed that they too had removed a... Read more

Six are installed and interconnected.

Wonderful features:
* They're all interconnected. If one alarms, they all alarm (therefore waking the dead ;)).

* Even better: interconnected False Alarm Control. If smoke in the kitchen causes the one wayyy up high to trigger... Just push the test button on ANY unit (one in the hall is on the wall, easily reached) and the False Alarm Control is set: all alarms are desensitized for 15 minutes! (They're not "off" -- just less sensitive. If the house were really on fire, the alarm would continue due to so much smoke.)

Pain in the neck (but this is how all alarms work):

After a few years, batteries get weak and the alarms start to chirp -- loudly -- once a minute. It begins at night when the house is colder (and batteries are weaker!) Ours, installed in 2000, began to do this a few months ago. Rude awakening for sure! Just went and replaced 100% of all batteries, and everyone can sleep again... Read more

I have this system installed in my house. I recently survived a fire in which this unit (Part of a system) did not go off even though the smoke was so thick I could not see across the room.

The fire at my house started from an outside outlet that penetrated the outside wall of my house. This is an Ionization type detector, great for hot fires with fine smoke particulate, ineffective for slow smoldering fires that produce thick deadly toxic smoke that will kill you before this type of alarm will go off.

We were lucky that that night my wife was having trouble sleeping when the fire started at 3 AM.If not me and my family may have died. It did not even dawn until after the firemen went home at 6 AM that the detector in the basement did not alarm, or any of the 8 smoke detectors in my house, all the same as this one. I pushed the button on the one in the basement and to my shock it beeped.I thought for sure it was just defective.

The unit at the top of... Read more
