We added this one when we installed a second gas-log fireplace in the new room. These units work well, especially for propane which can collect along the floors and low places in the home. Most outlets are placed perfectly for detecting it. No wiring, no installation. Just plug it in and it starts working. The instructions are very good and easy to read and follow. I tested the unit by using an extension cord and placing it in the firebox while I pushed in on the pilot light valve. The unit triggered right away so it takes very little gas to set it off. The unit also has a test button so you don't have to do this. (I just wanted to see if propane would really set it off. Not that I don't trust test buttons, but real gas is better than a test button in my mind.) Most LP vendors will test your detectors for free with a spray can of propane. (This is the way we had the first detector tested.) The... Did some research and the Safery Siren came out very high. The detector goes off one Saturday morning. Because the fireplace is in the den, that's where the Safety Siren is located. With some troubleshooting, it turns out one of the valves on the range is leaking gas. A call was made to the gas company and they advise to turn off the gas to the house and wait for a service technician to arrive. A technican shows up in 10 to 15 minutes, not bad. He takes his detector to the range area and no alarm. He then goes to other areas of the house where gas lines are present. No alarms. Then the technician says that I probably got the Safety Siern off the internet and wasn't as accurate as the one he had since his was a professional model and is calibrated every three months and is used by most gas companies in the US, blah blah blah, and the Safety Siren most... This resulted in 2 gas leaks and the line was replaced by the builder. Since then, my wife and I still smell gas in the basement when lighting a fire in the family room. So...we decided to buy this natural gas detector. It's been in the basement for a month but hasn't detected any gas, even though we can smell it. Today, I had the builder come in again and they found yet another small leak. Repairs complete, I decided to test this detector out with direct exposure to the natural gas feed in the fireplace. I placed it in the fireplace and closed the doors to the fireplace after turning on the gas (without lighting it). As is expected, the nauseating natural gas smell was strong but the detector never made a single sound - except for when I pushed the test/reset... Read more |
